Home fans revel in a classic New Year encounter
Surrey Scorchers 82-80 London Lions (32-19, 49-39, 65-62)
A sell-out New Year’s Day crowd at Surrey Sports Park celebrated a thrilling victory for the hometown Scorchers as they won their south-east derby match-up against London Lions.
Having seen their early 19-point lead evaporate, it had looked like Surrey might endure unwanted misery, but they came back to get it done down the stretch. The loss for London was particularly tough on Lions’ forward Cory Dixon, who shot an eye-popping 12 of 13 from the field.
Leading scorers – Hicks 21, Robinson 18, Steel 17 (Scorchers) Dixon 28, Robinson 25, Isenbarger 10 (Lions)
Turning point – Tony Hicks came alive in crunch time with a couple of slicing moves to the hoop and then when he slammed down a dunk with just two minutes left, it delivered new belief for Scorchers as they seized the initiative.
Key stat – Lions spilled the ball 20 times and that was far too sloppy in a game of this intensity.
Game hero(es) – The main trio for Scorchers were Josh Steel who showed great maturity and dropped 17 points, Jordan Williams who was a rock with 15 points and 12 boards, while Hicks did the business in the clutch as part of his 21-point and 5-steal haul.
