Bristol Flyers lock down on defence to avenge last week’s defeat to Glasgow Rocks.
Bristol Flyers 80 – 76 Glasgow Rocks (17-27, 33-45, 59-55)
Bristol Flyers have jumped back up into the BBL Championship Play-off places after beating third-placed Glasgow Rocks 80-76, taking the head-to-head between the teams and avenging a defeat last week north of the border.
It was only Bristol’s second home win over the Rocks in six previous BBL Championship meetings.
Leading scorers – Smith 18, Davis 15, Weary 11 (Flyers); Achara 19, Fraser 17, Josephs 14 (Rocks)
Turning point – Having trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, Flyers opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run as Leslee Smith scored five points. The decisive spell came as Bristol hit 12 points in a row over the third quarter break, holding Rocks scoreless for six minutes to take the lead at 63-55.
Key stat – Flyers’ defence was impenetrable for much of the second half. In 16 second half minutes, Rocks were allowed just 16 points, while the hosts poured in 40 to turn the game around. Overall, Bristol restricted Glasgow to just 32% shooting from the field.
Game hero – It was a team performance from Bristol with the scoring well-spread among seven players. But Leslee Smith stood out with 18 points and eight rebounds, including key baskets early in the second half.
