LBTV Pick of the Week: Radisson RED Glasgow Rocks v Manchester Giants
Details: Sunday 13 January, 5pm, Emirates Arena, BBL Cup, Semi-Finals, Second Leg
A place at the British Basketball Cup Finals is up for grabs with London Lions awaiting the winner. The Rocks won the first leg 77-85 on the road, but the Giants have been strong away from home this season and been victorious by 20+ in two of their last three games.
Willie Clayton is averaging 19 rebounds per game in the Cup so far this season with the Rocks’ scoring led by Kieron Achara’s 17 points per outing along with an average of 7 boards.
“We need to focus on the game. An eight-point lead would only become important in the last two minutes,” Rocks head coach, Darryl Wood.
“They’re a really good side in transition and our stops have to be finished with defensive rebounds as Willie Clayton in particular is big on the offensive glass.
“This would be a massive step for the organisation – we want to win silverware and this is a big opportunity.”
Last meeting: Giants 76-83 Rocks (Championship, December 2018)
Leicester Riders v Bristol Flyers
Details: Friday 11 January, 7:30pm, Morningside Arena, BBL Championship
The Riders moved above the Flyers with their double-winning weekend to start 2019, but Bristol can draw level at 8-4 with victory on the road. Andreas Kapoulas’ side have lost four of their last six with the gap closing from teams behind them.
Last time they met: Flyers 52-68 Riders (Championship, November 2018)
Manchester Giants v Cheshire Phoenix
Details: Friday 11 January, 7:30pm, Trafford Sportsdome, BBL Championship
The Giants moved into the Play-Off places above Cheshire last weekend after their contrasting results on Sunday. It’s the first of two meetings between the teams this month and could prove vital in the battle for the head-to-head.
Last time they met: Phoenix 74-79 Giants (Cup, November 2018)
DBL Sharks Sheffield v Worcester Wolves
Details: Friday 11 January, 7:30pm, EIS Sheffield, BBL Championship
The Wolves battled hard without Filip Kramer and Deshawn Freeman last week, but a first league win since the opening night continues to elude them. Sheffield were heavily beaten at home once again and will be looking to put that right to arrest their mini-slide.
Last time they met: Wolves 67-89 Sharks (Championship, November 2018)
Esh Group Eagles Newcastle v Plymouth Raiders
Details: Friday 11 January, 7:30pm, Eagles Community Arena, BBL Championship
A sellout crowd welcomes the opening of the Eagles’ new arena as they host Plymouth on Friday night. Newcastle came out on top in the meeting in Devon last Sunday and could complete a season sweep if they are victorious on a landmark night for the club.
Last time they met: Raiders 83-91 Eagles (Championship, January 2019)
London City Royals v DBL Sharks Sheffield
Details: Saturday 12 January, 7:30pm, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, BBL Championship
The Royals remain perfect at home this season after making it 4-0 last weekend to move up to sixth spot. Sheffield complete a double-header as they look to keep up the pressure on London Lions with the league leaders not in action.
Surrey Scorchers v Esh Group Eagles Newcastle
Details: Sunday 13 January, 2pm, Surrey Sports Park, BBL Championship
The Eagles have enjoyed some big wins on the road of late and face a Surrey side desperate to put together a run of results. They have split their two games in 2019 so far and need victories to cut the gap in the race for the Play-Offs.
Last time they met: Eagles 114-82 Scorchers (Championship, October 2018)
Cheshire Phoenix v Plymouth Raiders
Details: Sunday 13 January, 5:30pm, Cheshire Oaks Arena, BBL Championship
Cheshire fell out of the top eight with a tough overtime loss last week and they complete a double-header against two sides within their grasp. The Raiders go back-to-back on the road having gone 4-1 at home in their last five encounters including a win over the Phoenix last month.
