The Official Matchball Of The BBL
Jets Reach Trophy Final
Cheshire Jets have reached their second final of the season after beating Marshall MK Lions in the second leg of the BBL Trophy Semi Final yesterday, 102-68. They will now face Newcastle Eagles this Sunday at Guildford Spectrum, with the game tipping off at 3.00pm. The Jets led from tip to buzzer in a game that never really saw the Lions establish themselves, despite 21 points and 20 points from British pair Yorick Williams and Dru Spinks respectively, in the absence of imports EJ Harrison and Frank Holmes, whilst Shawn Myers led the Jets valiantly with 21 points of his own.
After a disastrous start in the first quarter for the Lions, in which they went 10-4 down after three minutes of action, the Jets took full advantage of this lack of momentum, as they soon raced to 18-4 up, when a Yorick Williams three pointer made it 18-7. The sides then went scoreless for the next minute, before the Lions began to climb back into the game, cutting the deficit to 20-14 with 3:01 left in the period. However a 14-2 run from the Jets ensured that the Lions' chances of gaining revenge for the BBL Cup Semi Final defeat against the Jets were already hampered.
From this point, the Jets never looked back, as they took the second quarter to lead 56-37, and had a 76-50 advantage going into the final period, in which they outscored the visitors 26-18 to win 102-68.
The loss compounded the Lions’ misery, as they also went down to the Eagles on Friday evening, courtesy of 21 points from smooth guard Joe Chapman, the turning point in the game being a 27-11 third quarter which formed a springboard for the Eagles’ 99-68 win, as they now top the BBL Championship table.
Eighth placed Worthing Thunder endured a mixed set of results this weekend, as a 89-107 defeat to Everton Tigers was followed by a dramatic 96-102 overtime win at next week’s Trophy Final venue against Guildford Heat yesterday afternoon, despite the Thunder being without Reggie Bratton and Heat player-coach, Chad McKnight, scoring 39 points. The results of basement sides PAWS London Capital and Essex Pirates were also variable, as the Pirates overcame Airwaves Plymouth Raiders 82-80, whilst PAWS London Capital lost 93-60 to Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, both on Saturday night.
