Lithuania Win Again

Justin Robinson’s 26 points were not enough to prevent England going down 92-78 against Lithuania B at Worcester University on Wednesday evening.

Paul James’ side were never able to build on a good start as the visitors completed a 2-0 victory in the series.

Twenty-three unanswered points turned a 25-21 lead after 70 second period seconds into a 44-25 deficit with 3:37 in the first half remaining, and although England did well to fight back to lead briefly the visitors’ experience eventually proved the difference.

Ogo Adegboye finished with 16 points and Ashley Hamilton was a point short of a double-double having pulled down 13 rebounds.

England did improve on the previous night’s poor shooting from both the field and foul line, but despite only narrowly losing the battle of boards 39-35, second chance points proved crucial as Lithuania scored two to England’s 11.

Mindaugas Kuzminkas led Lithuania with 16 points, while Martynas Andriuskevicius added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Morakinyo Williams opened the scoring off a James Jones assist, and although Lithuania answered with a 9-0 run, a Matthew Bryan-Amang basket launched an 11-2 tear that gave England a four point lead.

The hosts went into the first break leading 21-19, and Tayo Ogedengbe put them up by four before Arvydas Eitutavicius launched the tear which put the former Olympic bronze medallists into the driving seat.

Coach James called a timeout with 6:48 on the clock and Lithuania leading 28-25, but the move made little difference as England continued to turn the ball over.

Taner Adu eventually broke the run, and the hosts finished the half strongly as two treys from Robinson and one from Hamilton cut the deficit to 50-40 going into the locker room.

That run continued, and a Robinson basket made it 55-51 at the four minute mark in the third quarter before the same player made it a one point game at the midway stage of the period with a three-pointer off Adegboye’s assist.

An Adegboye free-throw completed the comeback as England took a 61-60 lead with three minutes of the quarter remaining, and a Robinson trey made it a two point game with as many minutes left before Lithuania closed out the period with four straight points to lead 68-64 at the final break.

That proved to be as good as it for England as the exertions of pulling back such a large deficit showed, with Deividas Gailius opening final stanza with a basket from downtown.

It was still a five point game at the midway stage of the period before Lithuania finished strongly to take the win.

England now move on to France next week to compete in a five-team tournament in Calais and Dunkirk.
