CJ Gettys has made it an amazing five weeks in a row in the All-Star 5, this time joined by two debutants including his teammate Drew Lasker, in a team that is paced by Surrey’s captain Tayo Ogedengbe and includes Ovie Soko for the second straight week.
Tayo Ogedengbe – Surrey Scorchers
Scorchers moved to 4-3 in the BBL Championship as they beat Plymouth Raiders on Saturday, behind Ogedengbe matching his career-high points total. Playing all 40 minutes, he scored 34 points, shooting 64% from the field and getting to the line 12 times as he proved too much to handle. He added five rebounds and four assists, scoring 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to stifle any Plymouth fightback.
CJ Gettys – Newcastle Eagles
Newcastle’s seven-footer is now tied at the top of the appearances chart for the season, but with all five of his having coming in consecutive weeks. On this occasion he was too much for Manchester Giants as he shot 13-17 (76%) from the field on his way to 28 points, completing a double-double with 12 rebounds and adding three assists.
Drew Lasker – Newcastle Eagles
From the same game, Drew Lasker rolled back the years as he was required to play increased minutes amidst some absences. The 37-year-old guard did a bit of everything for his team as he put up 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for another double-double, handing out five assists with two steals and two blocks. Six of those boards were at the offensive end, resulting in six of Newcastle’s 14 second chance points.
Skyler White – Surrey Scorchers
White is a second Scorcher to make the team after he put in two big performances over the weekend. In defeat to London Lions on Friday he matched his captain’s points tally as he had a massive double-double of 34 points and 10 rebounds, including shooting 5-10 three-pointers. The following night, he added another three triples en route to a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds in victory over Plymouth.
Ovie Soko – London Lions
Also putting in a pair of big performances was London’s GB International forward Ovie Soko, as the league leaders beat Surrey and B. Braun Sheffield Sharks. In a road win at Sheffield he had a big double-double of 23 points, on 10-14 (71%) shooting, and 11 rebounds, with 10 of his points coming in a dominant first quarter that enabled Lions to hold off a fightback. On Friday, he had 27 points as his team beat Scorchers at the Copper Box Arena.
