Tayo Ogedengbe leads the way among four double-doubles in this week’s All-Star 5, after captaining Surrey Scorchers to their first win of the 2019-20 BBL Cup campaign. He’s joined by a rival from that game and Sheffield’s unstoppable point guard – both making their second appearance – alongside a familiar face featuring for the first time this season, and a Rider who was perfect from the field.
Tayo Ogedengbe – Surrey Scorchers
The British forward, and Scorchers stalwart, led his team from the front with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 62% from the field and getting it done at both ends by adding three blocks and a steal. He scored a key bucket to put them back ahead with two minutes remaining, as they held on to beat London Lions 80-77.
Brandon Peel – London Lions
Directly opposing Ogedengbe in that game was Brandon Peel, who posted his third double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds, and makes his second All-Star 5 appearance in a row. It included 11 points in the fourth quarter as Lions came from 21 points down to lead heading into the final minute on Peel’s three-pointer, albeit ultimately in vain.
Mackey McKnight – B. Braun Sheffield Sharks
Also making a second appearance of the season so far is Sheffield’s point guard Mackey McKnight, who led his team to a fifth straight win on Friday night when his double-double of 20 points and 12 assists saw Sharks overpower Newcastle Eagles 93-69. He made eight of his points from the free-throw line, missing just once, and is third in the BBL for free-throws made.
Rashad Hassan – Plymouth Raiders
Hassan, twice a Molten BBL Team of the Year nominee, turned in his performance of the season so far with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, adding two steals and a block, although it wasn’t enough to prevent Raiders slipping to Bristol Flyers. Hassan now leads the league in field goals made.
Jesse Chuku – Leicester Riders
British forward Jesse Chuku was only the sixth player in the last 12 years, and the first in this season or last, to shoot perfectly from the field on double-figure field goal attempts as he went 10-10 on his way to 21 points as Leicester Riders beat Manchester Giants on Saturday. That came in just under 20 minutes, as he also added five rebounds.
Off the bench: Mike Tuck (B. Braun Sheffield Sharks), Tyrell Johnson (Plymouth Raiders), Matt Scott (London City Royals), Justin Robinson (London Lions), Ali Fraser (Radisson Red Glasgow Rocks), Jamell Anderson (Leicester Riders), Parker Jackson-Cartwright (Cheshire Phoenix).
