Caylin Raftopoulos returns to Scorchers for fourth season

Surrey Scorchers today confirmed Caylin Raftopoulos has re-signed for the club for a fourth season.

The 5’8″ guard returns to Creon’s team with a well-earned reputation as one of the best shooters in the BBL.

Raftopoulos, 27, averaged 5.8 points, 2.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds leading the Scorchers second unit last term, scoring a season high 14 points in a win against the Manchester Giants on New Year’s Day.

He brings a wealth of BBL experience back to the team, with five seasons in the UK’s top flight under his belt, including winning the BBL Playoffs with the Worcester Wolves.

Caylin will also continue as the Head Coach of the Scorchers Basketball Academy, situated at Three Rivers Academy.

“Surrey is a home to me, and I’m building up the Academy trying to make it my own,” said Caylin. “Last season we were building up some momentum, so it was disappointing due to COVID that we couldn’t push for a Play-Off spot.

“This year Play-Offs is a minimum, we want to be in contention with both the Play-Offs and Cup competitions.”

Caylin becomes the fifth signing to the Scorchers’ 2020-21 roster, returning with Tayo Ogedengbe, Lovell Cook, Skyler White, and newcomer Rashad Hassan.

“To have someone’s of Rashad’s calibre is great,” continued Caylin. “He is a dominant big who can play back to the basket – he’s a veteran.

“Lovell can score with the best of them, Skyler is an elite shooter, and Tayo does everything you need him to do. If we add a couple more pieces to that we will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos added, “Any coach who has to coach their own son knows it is not easy, but Caylin’s maturity and experience makes it a lot easier for me.

“He accepts his role, in some games he will have a big part to play, and in others we will need his experience from the bench.

“He’s a big part of the structure being the Head Coach for our Academy and I’m really excited to get to keep him for another season.”
