Newcastle Eagles made it two wins of two following their victory over Cheshire Phoenix Sunday whilst Plymouth Raiders managed to pick up their first win of the season.
Eagles newbie Sade Aded-Hussein led Eagles to their 92-100 away victory over Phoenix, picking up a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds, alongside another standout performance from Rahmon Fletcher, who also picked up his own double-double of 17 points and 10 assists.
The Toon side’s win over Phoenix today, and their Friday night win over rivals Leicester Riders, now puts them top of the Cup North Group standings.
Meanwhile, in the Cup South Group, Plymouth Raiders’ first win of the season came on their home turf, as they managed to edge Surrey Scorchers 96-91.
It wasn’t an easy win for the Raiders however, as the two teams continued to trade leads throughout the game, and with less than 40 seconds remaining in the final Quarter, it looked like fans were to be treated to yet another overtime thriller, as the two teams were tied at 91 a-piece.
Josh Wilcher, who also picked up 30 points himself, then managed to sink three consecutive free-throws, giving Raiders just 30 seconds to hold onto a small three-point lead, and as Scorchers’ Marcus White threw up a deep three-pointer, Raiders fans clenched their teeth as the ball began to dip towards the basket. But alas, it wasn’t to be for Scorchers or White as the shot came up just short, bouncing off the rim into the possession of Raiders.
Wilcher would then sink a further two free-throws to give Raiders an extended lead to hold onto until the final buzzer sounded.
