Glasgow Rocks extend basketball family

The Glasgow Rocks have strengthened links with the Junior Rocks and Lady Rocks sections as well as expanding their reach by the inclusion of a Glasgow Rocks Wheelchair basketball team, which will be competing in the BWB National League North competition.

Rocks’ co-owner, Duncan Smillie, is excited at the growing nature of the Glasgow Rocks and predicts more to come.

“Bringing the Lady Rocks, Rocks Juniors and Wheelchair organisations under the Glasgow Rocks umbrella is an exciting announcement,” he said.

“All 3 of these organisations are run impeccably and we are honoured to be officially associated with them, there will still be total autonomy in their running but we will work hand in hand in looking for new commercial partners and in our joint strategies going forward.

“We would hope to have more exciting announcements around these partnerships soon so watch this space.”

Paul Traynor, General Manager and Head Coach of the Glasgow Rocks Juniors Basketball Club, added:

“We now have a clear pathway from junior players at under-12s level right through to Senior men and to the Glasgow Rocks professional team.

“This announcement comes on the back of our club’s most successful season to date at amateur level, and at a time of continued growth for our club and for the sport of basketball in Scotland.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Glasgow Rocks staff for the support they’ve shown towards our club and to the sport of basketball at community level, as well as their appreciation of how basketball can change lives and offer hope and a sense of belonging to young people of all ages.

“We look forward to continuing to build this relationship during the seasons to come.”

Lisa Palombo of the Lady Rocks Basketball Club is looking forward to a fruitful relationship moving forward with the Glasgow Rocks.

“Lady Rocks are delighted to re-ignite our formal partnership with Glasgow Rocks, under the new ownership of Duncan Smillie. We hope that bringing Lady Rocks and Glasgow Rocks together, we will continue to strengthen our development pathway from grassroots through to elite performance, offering more development opportunities for all.”

Newest members to join the family, the Glasgow Rocks Wheelchair Basketball team, are thrilled to be coming onboard for 2018/19. Formerly known as the St Mirren Warriors, they have been in existence for over 30 years and are now making the official switch to be known as the Glasgow Rocks.

The wheelchair team currently have Paralympian Gary Davidson on the squad as well as Bobby Park, both of whom have played at GB level.

Jen Scally, Glasgow Rocks wheelchair basketball team head coach, is looking forward to being part of the Glasgow Rocks framework and identity.

“We are delighted to be coming on board as part of the Glasgow Rocks family. As the only professional basketball team in Scotland, the Rocks lead the way in terms of showcasing the sport of basketball.
