Glasgow Rocks maintained their stranglehold on third position in the BBL Championship table thanks to a hard-fought 94-84 victory over fellow play-off contenders UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders at the Emirates Arena on Sunday evening.
Both sides traded baskets early on, but it was the Raiders who made the first break in the contest with a 7-0 burst to take the score out to 11-17 midway through the period. The Rocks managed to get themselves back into the contest s the quarter progressed and their resilience saw the home side end the period strongly as they closed the gap back to just two points at 23-25 at the end of the first stanza.
In the second quarter, the Rocks steadily increased their lead throughout the quarter and managed to open up a nine-point advantage at 47-38 with three minutes remaining in the half. A Javvarris Barnett basket trimmed the deficit back to four points at 47-43, but the Rocks finished strongly as they bagged the final six points of the half to head into the locker rooms leading 53-43 at the half.
In the second half, an early Sterling Davis basket gave the home side their biggest lead of the contest at 15 points with the score at 62-47 with three minutes gone in the third period. Both sides traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, but it was the Raiders who managed to trim the deficit somewhat as they headed into the final stanza trailing by nine points at 78-69.
In the final quarter, the Raiders got themselves back into the contest and trimmed the deficit back to just five points at 81-76 early in the final period, but that was as close as they would get as the Rocks held off their opponents potential fightback as they extended their advantage back out to 12 points at 89-77 with two minutes remaining in the game.
A Colin O'Reilly three-pointer got the Raiders back to within single figures, but the Rocks remained strong down the stretch and held on for the all-important victory.
Donald Robinson was the main man for the Rocks as he netted a team-high 24 points in the victory, but it was Michael Ojo who led all scorers in the contest as he secured a 30-point haul for the Raiders in the defeat.
