Plymouth Raiders completed the sensational signing of former NBA Draft pick Ryan Richards for the rest of the 2019-20 season, in a move that is sure to send waves across the BBL.
The 7’0″ Centre, originally from Chatham in Kent, was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2010, and since then has applied his trade all over the world with spells in Austria, Hungary, China, Mexico and Greece.
The 28 year old GB International will be familiar to Raiders’ fans, having spent two temporary spells with the Surrey Scorchers, and his stand out performance against the Raiders last season is one the Raiders will be hoping to see more often, when he notched up 29 points in an impressive shooting display, making his first six shots from all distances.
Ryan joins former Royals, Will Neighbour and Matt Scott in the new look Raiders’ line-up, and following two fantastic performances resulting in a win away to league leaders, Glasgow Rocks, followed by a convincing win against the Surrey Scorchers in front of a packed Plymouth Pavilions, the Raiders are making a clear statement that this season is far from over.
Speaking of obtaining Ryan’s signature, Paul James said, “I’m delighted to be able to welcome Ryan Richards to the Raiders family. He is certainly a player that will make a big difference to any team and I’m glad we were able to pen him for the remainder of the season.
“I had a long chat with Ryan about what we are trying to achieve at the Raiders and that he needed to be somewhere for a period of time to get a good run of games under his belt and get back to his best.
“We are both motivated and determined to make the most of this opportunity where both the Raiders and Ryan will benefit”
Ryan added, “I’m extremely excited to be in Plymouth, playing with this group of guys. Having played in Plymouth last year I know how great the fans are and how good the atmosphere is on game days.
“I’m excited to get everything together and challenge for a championship, anything less would be a disappointment in my eyes, and I think we’ve got the talent to do it.
“I’m excited to get to work and happy to be here.”
Richards will be making his first appearance against the Worcester Wolves this Friday evening, and Raiders’ fans will have their first opportunity to see Ryan is home action on Sunday 16th February, where the club will be looking to break it’s losing streak against the Riders, which dates back to 2012.
