Surrey Scorchers have made 6’5” American Guard, Chavares ‘Chip’ Flanigan, their first signing of the 2019-20 BBL season.
The 23-year-old from Illinois graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with All-GLIAC honours and was named Male Athlete of the Year at the 2019 UW-P Rangers awards. He also received the 2019 Male Standout Performance award for a game in which he recorded a tally of 32 points – including a 100% field shooting accuracy – plus 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists.
“Our intention was always going to be to sign a big combo guard if we were unable to bring Quincy Taylor back,” said Scorchers Head Coach, Creon Raftopolous. “Chavares knows how to win and is comfortable playing all guard positions as well as small forward.
“His ability to run a team as a pass-first Point Guard will be key in our up-tempo style of play. His size allows him to score on smaller guards and switch on all pick-and-roll situations on defence.
“It’s never an easy job replacing a fan favourite, but we believe Chavares will be great for us with Scorchers’ fans support.”
Flanigan added, “I’m really excited about this new chapter in my life and to be a part of this Club. From what I’ve seen, the fans really support their team, and the Scorchers are really supportive of their community – that was really appealing to me, and one of the main reasons that I have signed.
“I have high expectations for the new season, for us to be one of the top teams in the BBL, and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win. I can’t wait for the season to start.”
Scorchers can also confirm that Quincy Taylor has joined BC Kuršiai of Lithuania’s NBL, whilst Willie Atwood has signed for Austrian Champions Kapfenberg Bulls. Scorchers thank both players for their efforts and wish them well for the future.
