Plymouth Raiders have announced that Australian point guard Josh Wilcher has re-signed for the 2019-20 season.
Wilcher returned to Plymouth at the start of this season and was a crucial part of the club’s success, averaging 17.3 points along with 6.7 assists per game to help his side reach the Play-Offs for the first time in seven seasons.
Wilcher battled with a shoulder injury that saw him sidelined for a couple of league games, but played a major role in key victories including on the opening night of Newcastle’s Eagles Community Arena and knocking out league champions London Lions – playing nearly all 160 minutes in the benecos BBL Play-Offs.
He was also voted as the Raiders’ MVP for the 2018-19 season by the fans to edge out Donte Nicholas and Rashad Hassan for the award.
“It’s great to be coming back to the Raiders for another season,” said Wilcher.
“This season we accomplished bringing the club back to the Play-Offs and showing the league how good we can be.
“I’m excited being a part of the future going forward and hope we can make more positive steps starting in September.
“I’ll be heading back to play in the QBL for Townsville Heat over the summer as we chase a 3-peat and I’m looking forward to working on my game down there so I can come back stronger next season.”
Head coach Paul James added: “It’s just brilliant that Josh is back next season. I tried to sign him on at least two occasions at my previous club.
“I’m delighted he is here with us in Plymouth as he has shown out to be the player I thought he was.
“He has had an outstanding season. Josh is a true professional and a real tough competitor and is everything I look for in a point guard. He’s a very smart and intelligent player who does it all.
“He makes the people around him better through his unselfish play, but at the same time can take a game by the scruff of the neck and score the ball in many ways.
“What more could I possibly want from my point guard? It’s great to have Josh Wilcher back in Raiders green.”
